(Thursday 17 October): Here are our favourite trends of the week:
The rise of themed adventures
According to the Intrepid Adventure Index, travellers are increasingly booking trips in which they can indulge their passions. The company’s food adventures have been one of its fastest-growing ranges, with interest in Eastern European cuisine proving especially popular. Families are also choosing to travel to far-flung destinations — with Peru being the company’s fastest-growing choice — while bookings for Intrepid’s cycling trips have grown 35% a year to date.
Trivago reveals top destinations of summer 2019
Trivago has released accommodation booking data for the past summer. Spain proved to be the top choice for almost one in five Brits, followed by the USA, with 14% of holidaymakers travelling to the country. Perhaps more surprisingly, Turkey was the third most popular destination, while Italy and Portugal completed the list of the top five hotspots.
The cities with the highest number of tourists per square mile
Columbus Direct analysed the number of international visitors in the world’s hotspots to reveal the cities with the highest density of travellers. With 5,090 tourists per square mile, Phuket is the global location most-densely populated with visitors. Travellers looking for less-populated spots should opt for Hong Kong, which receives 58 visitors per square mile.
