The trends that caught our eye this week:
Getting sporty
Sporting experiences are among the top five categories booked by travellers using Airbnb Experiences over the past year. According to the online hospitality service, this category has grown 380% since 2018. Travellers are looking to try something out of the ordinary — with more than 7,000 options available, the top trending sporting experiences include a warrior indoor obstacle training in Wisconsin, a samurai sword class in Kyoto and a flying trapeze lesson in Toronto.

Istanbul top hotspot
Istanbul is set to be a city tourism hotspot this summer. A study undertaken by ForwardKeys for European Cities Marketing looked at the growth in airline seat capacity and long-haul flight bookings to 30 major European cities, two strong predictors of visitor arrivals. The findings paint a bright picture for the Turkish destination, which is expected to do particularly well due to its new airport and easing of security concerns.

VIP Vatican world’s best activity
A tour of the Vatican Museums with skip-the-line access is the world’s best bookable experience, according to the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. The awards, which recognise the world’s top tours and activities as decided by reviewers, show that travellers have most enjoyed visiting the Sistine Chapel, Raphael’s Rooms and St Peter’s Basilica. A pub crawl of London’s historic bars took top honours in the UK, while the world’s top food experience can be found in Shaanxi, China.
